Abstract

ABSTRACT Nursing services in the Emergency Department (ED) play an essential role in shaping patients’ experiences, particularly through therapeutic communication performed by nurses. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between nurse communication, patient anxiety levels, and patient satisfaction in the ED of Gatoel Hospital, Mojokerto. A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was applied. The sample consisted of 90 respondents selected using consecutive sampling. Research instruments included a therapeutic nurse communication questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A) to measure anxiety, and a patient satisfaction questionnaire adapted from Nursalam’s service quality dimensions. Data were analyzed using non-parametric correlation tests. The results showed that most nurse therapeutic communication was in the moderate category (70%), most respondents’ anxiety levels were normal (51.1%), and patient satisfaction was generally moderate (58.9%). Correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship between nurse communication and patient anxiety levels (p-value 0.001 < 0.05) as well as between nurse communication and patient satisfaction (p-value 0.001 < 0.05). In conclusion, nurse therapeutic communication is significantly related to both anxiety and satisfaction among patients in the ED of Gatoel Hospital. These findings highlight the importance of enhancing communication skills as part of continuous improvement in the quality of nursing services in emergency care. Keywords: therapeutic communication, patient anxiety, patient satisfaction, emergency department, nurse
