Abstract
ABSTRACT Hypoglycemia is common in newborns. Babies experiencing hypoglycemia are usually asymptomatic. Prolonged hypoglycemia can lead to impaired neurological and brain development (Melinda, 2020). The main causes of infant mortality in Indonesia are low birth weight (LBW), jaundice, hypoglycemia, and neonatal infections (Melinda, 2020). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between low birth weight (LBW) and the incidence of hypoglycemia at Sakinah Islamic Hospital in 2025. The study design was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. The population was 2,196 newborns, and a sample size of 339 was drawn using simple random sampling. The data obtained were then analyzed univariately and bivariately, with statistical analysis using Fisher's Exact Test with an α value of <0.05. The majority of births were not low birth weight (290 respondents (85.5%). The majority of neonates were not hypoglycemic (323 respondents (95.3%). The Fisher's Exact Test results yielded a p-value of <0.001 <0.05, indicating a relationship between low birth weight (LBW) and the incidence of hypoglycemia at Sakinah Islamic Hospital, Mojokerto Regency in 2025. The OR of 17.755 indicates a 17-fold higher risk of hypoglycemia in LBW infants. Hypoglycemia is caused by decreased production or excessive use of glucose reserves. Hypoglycemia occurs in neonates born with low glycogen and fat stores, with limited capacity to produce glucose through gluconeogenesis or excessive use of peripheral tissue glucose. The frequency of hypoglycemia is more pronounced in low birth weight neonates compared to those with normal birth weight. Healthcare workers, especially midwives, are expected to analyze LBW status so that preventive measures can be taken to prevent hypoglycemia. Keywords: LBW, hypoglycemia, newborns
