Abstract

ABSTRACT Stunting is a child growth and development disorder caused by nutritional deficiencies, infections, or inadequate stimulation. In the short term, stunting adversely affects brain development, intelligence, physical growth, and metabolic processes. Long-term consequences include reduced cognitive ability and compromised immunity—leading to increased susceptibility to illness and a higher risk of non-communicable diseases (Safitri, 2024). This study aimed to determine the relationship between Low Birth Weight (LBW) and the incidence of stunting among children under five in the working area of the Nawangan Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Pacitan Regency. The study employed an observational analytic design with a case-control approach. The total population consisted of 1,221 children under five, with a sample size of 118 selected via simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods; statistical analysis was performed using the Chi square test with a significance level of α < 0.05. The results showed that more than half of the births did not involve LBW (70 respondents or 59.3%). The Chi-square test yielded a p-value of <0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between LBW and stunting incidence at the Nawangan Community Health Center, Pacitan Regency. An Odds Ratio (OR) of 6.130 demonstrated that the risk of stunting was six times higher among infants with LBW. LBW is closely linked to fetal morbidity and mortality; it can hinder cognitive development, increase the risk of future chronic diseases, contribute to various health issues, and constitute a significant health concern due to increased susceptibility to infections. Healthcare professionals, particularly midwives, are expected to assess LBW status to facilitate preventive measures against stunting. Keywords: LBW, stunting, children under five
