Abstract

Abstract The neonatal period is a continuation of intrauterine life, requiring the infant to survive and adapt to life outside the womb—a transition that carries a risk of complications. Common complications include asphyxia, tetanus, infection, birth trauma, low birth weight, and respiratory distress syndrome. This study aimed to determine the relationship between gestational age, mode of delivery, and the incidence of neonatal infection at Bhayangkara HS Samsoeri Mertojoso Hospital, Surabaya. This was an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all 570 neonates born between January and December 2025; total sampling was employed. Data analysis utilized the Chi-Square test followed by the contingency coefficient test. Analysis using the Chi-Square test at a significance level of α = 0.05 yielded a p-value of 0.000, indicating a relationship between gestational age and the incidence of neonatal infection. The contingency coefficient was C = 0.397, placing the relationship in the moderate to-strong category. The Chi-Square test at α = 0.05 also yielded a p-value of 0.000, indicating a relationship between the mode of delivery and the incidence of neonatal infection. The contingency coefficient was C = 0.358, indicating a moderate-to-strong relationship. Gestational age and mode of delivery are factors contributing to neonatal infection. The condition of the pregnant woman upon hospital admission—such as prolonged labor or premature rupture of membranes—also contributes to the occurrence of neonatal infection. Medical personnel are strongly advised to conduct rigorous screening of pregnant women with risk factors for preterm birth or premature rupture of membranes immediately prior to the delivery process. Keywords: Gestational age, mode of delivery, neonatal infection
