Abstract

Music can be used in an effort to create a healing environment. One strategy that focuses on creating a healing environment can be done by providing options that can be selected and controlled by the patient and provide a positive alternative distraction in patients. The purpose of this literature review is to discuss the effectiveness of Javanese Gending as music therapy and its implications for nursing. Research articles collected are about music therapy. Articles are collected through CINAHL's electronic database and ScienceDirect by using the keywords of gending, music therapy, nursing, psychological, and anxiety. Criteria of the article used is published in the period between the years 2003-2013, and obtained a number of 15 articles. Discussions on this literature review include: music therapy, the effects of music therapy, gamelan music, and the implications of para. The music created in the gamelan comes from a combination of musical instruments contained therein. The rhythm of music is generally gentle and reflects the harmony of life, as is the principle of life adopted by the Javanese society in general. The nurse may facilitate the patient to select the appropriate type of music and the volume within safe limits to be heard as therapy. Keywords : gending, music, nursing, psychology, therapy
