Abstract

ABSTRACT Patient fall incident is one of the most frequent incidents in the hospital setting. The fall incident has a detrimental effect on the patients and the hospital. From the fall incidents report in Doctor Mohamad Soewandhie Regional General Hospital Surabaya, the patient fall incident occurred almost every month and the number has increased. Nurses' knowledge and behavior play an important role in implementing the prevention of fall risk. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between nurses' knowledge about the fall risk with the ability to take preventive measures for the fall risk. This study used a correlation study with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variable of this study was the nurse's knowledge of fall risk and the dependent variable was the ability to take preventive measures for the fall risk. There were 45 nurses in the medical surgical room of Doctor Mohamad Soewandhie Regional General Hospital Surabaya as the respondents in this study who met the inclusion criteria selected using a simple random sampling technique. The instrument used was the nurses' knowledge questionnaire about the patient's fall risk and the observation checklist sheet of the nurses' actions in preventing the fall risk. The results of this study showed that the majority of the nurses have good knowledge (65%), there are nurses have insufficient knowledge (2%). The nurses with good ability were 62% and nurses have poor ability (7%). From statistical tests with Spearman rank with significant value α = 0,05, where P = 0.014 (P < α) then H0 is rejected, so there is a relationship between nurses’ knowledge about fall risk with the ability to take preventive measures for the fall risk. The results of this studycan be used as input for the nursing quality team to increase nurses' knowledge and skills in carrying out nursing actions to prevent the patient's risk from falling, in addition to the training provided nursing managers provide preceptors who become role models and perform performance assessments.
