Abstract
Abstract – The difficulty in diagnosing TB from clinical samples of sputum is caused by patients suspected of having TB coughing in an inefficient manner and potentially causing fatigue so that the sputum produced is not optimal. This study aims to determine the effect of effective cough intervention on sputum discharge from suspected TB patients at the Pacet District Health Center. This research uses a pre-experimental design approach post test only with control design. The research population was suspected TB patients at the Pacet District Health Center with the sampling technique used Consecutive Sampling a total of 42 respondents. The independent variable is effective cough intervention and the dependent variable is sputum output. The research data was tested using Mann Withney. The results of the study showed that the sputum output from suspected TB patients in the group that underwent intervention was mostly good, namely 16 respondents (76.2%). Meanwhile, almost all of the sputum output from suspected TB patients in the control group was not good in terms of sputum output, as many as 17 respondents (80.9%). Statistical test analysis using Test Man withney obtained p value 0.002 < α = 0.05 so it can be concluded that there is an effect of effective coughing exercises on sputum production in suspected TB patients at the Pacet District Health Center. It is hoped that the results of this research can be part of an intervention in overcoming the problem of ineffective airway clearance and also difficulties in expelling sputum to meet sample adequacy in establishing a TB diagnosis. Key words: Effective cough, sputum production, tuberculosis.
