Abstract

ABSTRACT Schools Schools are environments that are vulnerable to the transmission of infectious diseases due to high student interaction and the suboptimal implementation of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB), particularly the habit of handwashing with soap (HWWS). This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of HWWS education on students’ handwashing behavior as a preventive effort against infectious diseases. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design with a quantitative approach. The population consisted of 57 fourth- and fifth-grade students of MI Ihyaul Ulum Cangaan, with a sample of 37 respondents determined using Slovin’s formula and purposive sampling. The research instrument was a HWWS behavior questionnaire consisting of 21 items. The intervention was carried out through lectures, discussions, posters, PowerPoint media, and demonstration of the six steps of HWWS. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed an improvement in students’ handwashing behavior from poor to fair and good categories. A significant difference was found between pretest and posttest results, with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). HWWS education was proven effective in improving students’ handwashing behavior and can be routinely implemented in elementary schools as a strategy to prevent infectious diseases.
