Abstract

Abstract - Dental caries is a common dental health problem among adolescents in Indonesia. Dental health behaviors, such as frequency, timing, and technique of tooth brushing, as well as routine check-ups, play an important role in the incidence of caries. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between dental health behaviors and the incidence of dental caries in the working area of the Lespadangan Community Health Center in Mojokerto District. This study employed an analytical observational design with a case-control approach. The population consisted of junior high school students in the Lespadangan Health Center service area. A sample of 41 case groups and 41 control groups was selected using proportionate stratified random sampling and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that most respondents did not brush their teeth regularly (51.2%), did not brush their teeth at the right time (52.4%), brushed their teeth properly (56.1%), did not undergo regular dental check-ups (51.2%), and experienced dental caries (53.7%). The Chi-Square test results showed a significant association between the frequency of tooth brushing and the occurrence of dental caries (p-value = 0.04), the timing of tooth brushing and the occurrence of dental caries (p value = 0.00), brushing technique and dental caries (p value=0.03), and dental check ups and dental caries (p value=0.01). It is hoped that schools and health centers will regularly educate adolescents about the importance of brushing teeth regularly, on time, using proper technique, and undergoing regular dental check-ups.
