Abstract
Abstract - The duration of the pre-operative fast is an important part of the patient's preparation before the surgical procedure. However, fasting that lasts too long can negatively impact the patient's metabolic condition, including blood sugar levels. This study aims to determine the relationship between the duration of pre-operative fasting and the blood sugar levels of elective surgery patients in the inpatient room of Al-Islam H.M. Mawardi Hospital. This study uses a quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design and cross-sectional method. The study population was inpatients undergoing elective surgery. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation of medical records and direct interviews. The independent variable is the duration of the pre-operative fasting (in hours), while the dependent variable is the patient's blood sugar level (mg/dL). Data analysis used the Spearman's rho correlation test. Most of the respondents fasted in the moderate category (6-8 hours), which was 18 people (60%). Meanwhile, pre-operative blood sugar levels were mostly in the hyperglycemia category (60%). The results of the analysis showed a moderate negative relationship between the duration of fasting and blood sugar levels with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.434 and a significance value (p) of 0.017 (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant negative relationship between the duration of preoperative fasting and the blood sugar levels of elective surgical patients. The longer the patient fasts, the lower the blood sugar level tends to be. These findings confirm the importance of proper fasting duration regulation to maintain metabolic stability and patient safety during surgical procedures.
