Abstract

ABSTRACT Work stress is one of the psychosocial problems that are increasingly found in modern work environments. One of the factors of work stress is workload. There are 60% of employees who experience work stress. If this is left to continue continuously, it can potentially impact psychological well-being and work productivity. This study aims to determine the effect of workload on work stress among employees of the Health Quarantine Center (BBKK) in Surabaya City. This research is a quantitative study using an observational analytic method with a cross sectional approach. The instruments used were the Workplace Stress Scale (WSS) questionnaire for work stress and the NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) for workload. The population consisted of 177 employees. Based on sample calculations, 78 respondents were obtained using Simple Random Sampling technique. This research was conducted in July 2025. Of the 78 respondents, it showed that the majority had a risky workload as many as 62 employees (79.5%), and experienced work stress as many as 71 employees (91.0%). The Chi Square test showed ρ < α (0.05), which is 0.00, meaning there is a significant influence between workload and work stress. The Risk Prevalence (RP) value of 1.574 indicates that respondents with a risky workload have a 1.076 times greater likelihood of experiencing work stress compared to those with a non-risky workload. Workload has influenced work stress among employees, The higher the workload perceived by employees, the higher the level of work stress experienced. It is expected that the management of BBKK Surabaya will conduct regular evaluations of workload distribution and provide stress management training programs.
