Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Standard precautions are fundamental principles in infection prevention and control (IPC) that must be implemented by all healthcare workers, including medical students (clinical clerks) during their clinical rotations. Although education regarding standard precautions has been incorporated into the medical curriculum, compliance levels among clinical clerks in teaching hospitals remain varied. Methods: This study is an analytical observational research with a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 102 clinical clerks undergoing clinical rotations at a teaching hospital. The dependent variable was compliance with standard precautions, while the independent variables included individual factors (knowledge, attitude, risk perception), organizational factors (safety climate, availability of personal protective equipment [PPE] and facilities, IPC training during clerkship), and occupational factor (workload, barriers to standard precaution implementation). Data were collected using questionnaires and direct observation, and analyzed using logistic regression. Results: Significant associations were found between compliance and the following variables: knowledge (p = 0.007), attitude (p = 0.043), safety climate (p = 0.010), availability of PPE and facilities (p = 0.008), and IPC training during clerkship (p = 0.018). In contrast, risk perception (p = 0.751), workload (p = 0.338), and barriers to implementation (p = 0.652) were not significantly associated with compliance (p > 0.05). Knowledge emerged as the most influential factor, with an Exp(B) value of 17.590. Conclusion: Knowledge is the most dominant factor influencing clinical clerks’ compliance with standard precautions. Strengthening education, providing structured IPC training, and fostering a culture of safety from the early stages of clinical education are essential to improve adherence to infection prevention and control practices. Keywords: Standard precautions, clinical clerks, medical students, teaching hospital, individual factors, organizational factors, occupational factor, compliance.
