Abstract

ABSTRACT Early marriage remains a social phenomenon with a wide impact on maternal mental health and children's psychological development. This study aims to analyze the influence of early-married mothers' mental health on the emergence of mental disorders in adolescents in Malang Regency. The research method used was a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 205 respondents obtained through multistage area sampling or quota-based multistage sampling techniques. Data collection instruments included standardized maternal mental health and adolescent mental disorders questionnaires (SCL-90). Data analysis was conducted using ordinal logistic regression and Pearson's Chi Square correlation test and Likelihood Ratio to examine the relationship and influence of variables. The results showed a significant relationship between the mental health of mothers who married early and the level of mental disorders in adolescents. The ordinal regression analysis showed that maternal mental status significantly influenced the mental status of children. The model fit the data and was suitable for use (Pearson's Goodness-of-Fit = 10.164, p = 0.602; Deviance = 11.249, p = 0.508), with a moderate to strong relationship strength (Nagelkerke's Pseudo R-Square = 0.521). The parameter estimates showed a positive direction of influence: the higher the mother's mental disorders, the higher the risk of the child experiencing mental disorders. In conclusion, maternal mental health after early marriage significantly influences the mental health of adolescents in Malang Regency. This study recommends the need for more comprehensive public health policies to protect women from early marriage while providing mental health support services for mothers and children.
