Abstract

ABSTRACT Stunting remains a serious health problem in Indonesia. Efforts to improve the nutritional status of toddlers include interventions such as supplementary feeding (SF) using local foods and the implementation of appropriate feeding practices. This study aims to analyze the impact of SF using local food ingredients and parental feeding practices on the nutritional status of infants in the working area of the UPT Puskesmas Jati Kota Probolinggo. This study used a cross-sectional analytical observational design with a sample of 102 toddlers selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires and observations, then analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (logistic regression) methods. The results of the study show that most of the toddlers aged 1–2 years (56.9%) were male (64.7%) and had mothers with a high school education (87.3%). Most of the parents worked as private employees/entrepreneurs (88.2%) and had incomes below the minimum wage (67.4%). The prevalence of malnutrition decreased from 63.7% to 52.0% after the provision of SF. Most respondents had good SF feeding practices (74.5%) and appropriate parenting practices (54.9%). The chi-square test results indicate that there is an influence of SF feeding patterns on the nutritional status of toddlers (p=0.004). There is an effect of parental care patterns on the nutritional status of infants (p=0.006). The logistic regression test shows a significant model (χ²=16.550; p=0.000) with Nagelkerke R²=0.200. Poor SF patterns increase the risk of malnutrition by 2.9 times (PR = 2.877; 95% CI: 1.227–6.748), while appropriate parenting patterns increase the likelihood of good nutrition by 3.8 times (PR = 3.814; 95% CI: 1.404–10.357). The dominant factor is SF administration. The provision of SF made from local foods and parental feeding practices have a significant effect on the nutritional status of toddlers. Local food-based nutritional interventions accompanied by education on feeding practices need to be strengthened as a preventive strategy in combating stunting.
