Abstract

Abstract - Preschoolers are children between the ages of 3-`6. During this period, children are very active and engaged in a variety of activities, but their immune systems are not stable, so they are more susceptible to illness and face hospital procedures and so-called hospitalizations. Hospitalization is a scary situation that causes anxiety for children. Untreated anxiety can have a negative impact on children and affect their length of stay in the hospital. Storytelling is a way to reduce anxiety. This study was conducted to examine the effect of storytelling on hospitalized preschoolers' anxiety levels. This study uses a quantitative study design with a quasi-experimental method using a pre-test and post-test approach for one group. The test used was the Wilcoxon Signed Rank conducted on 50 preschoolers. The p-value was < 0.000. α0.05. Before the storytelling intervention was given, the majority of children's anxiety levels were in the panic category with a total of 13 children (26%), whereas after the storytelling intervention was given there was a difference in children's anxiety levels, namely in the mild category with a total of 26 children (52%) this means that there is a decrease in the level of anxiety in preschool children before and after being given storytelling The results of the study concluded that reading aloud was effective in reducing anxiety levels in hospitalized preschoolers aged 3 to 6 years. Keywords: Storytelling, preschoolers, anxiety, hospitalization
