Abstract
ABSTRACT Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with high prevalence among the elderly due to reduced insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta cell function. Physical activity is recognized as a key non-pharmacological strategy to lower blood glucose levels, yet many older adults remain inactive. This study aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity and blood glucose levels in elderly patients with T2DM at NSM Mahakam Clinic, Malang. This study employed a cross-sectional design with an observational analytic approach. A total of 71 elderly respondents with T2DM were recruited using purposive sampling. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while postprandial blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The majority of respondents had moderate physical activity (54%) and controlled blood glucose levels (54%). Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between physical activity and blood glucose control (p = 0.000). Respondents with moderate physical activity were more likely to achieve controlled blood glucose levels (44%), whereas those with low activity mostly had uncontrolled levels (36%). Physical activity is significantly associated with blood glucose control in elderly patients with T2DM. Moderate-intensity activity contributes to maintaining stable glucose levels. It is recommended that elderly individuals perform regular physical activity, such as walking or group exercise, for at least 150 minutes per week. Healthcare providers should promote education and support programs to integrate physical activity into the daily lifestyle of elderly patients with diabetes.
