Abstract

ABSTRACT Nutritional issues have become increasingly complex; alongside persistent undernutrition, stunting has emerged as a significant concern. Stunting arises from chronic undernutrition and inadequate nutritional practices, leading to suboptimal cognitive development, increased susceptibility to illness, and reduced competitiveness. This study aimed to determine the relationship between a history of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women and the incidence of stunting among children under five in Ketepung Village, Kebonagung District, Pacitan Regency. This study employed an observational analytic design with a case-control approach. The population consisted of 156 children under five, with a sample size of 50 selected via simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with statistical analysis performed using the Chi-square test (α < 0.05). Twenty respondents (40%) were pregnant women who experienced CED. The Chi-square test yielded a p-value of <0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between CED in pregnant women and the incidence of stunting in Ketepung Village, Kebonagung District, Pacitan Regency. An Odds Ratio (OR) of 15.583 demonstrated that the risk of stunting was 15 times higher among children whose mothers had a history of CED. A mother's nutritional status during pregnancy reflects her physiological condition—shaped by the consumption, absorption, and utilization of nutrients— which ultimately influences fetal growth and development. Healthcare professionals, particularly midwives, are expected to assess CED status in pregnant women to facilitate preventive measures against stunting.
