Abstract

Abstrac: Suctioning is an important nursing procedure to maintain the patient’s airway in the presence of secretions. However, this procedure may cause side effects, one of which is a decrease in oxygen saturation. This study aims to determine the difference in oxygen saturation among patients undergoing suctioning with pressures of 10 mmHg and 15 mmHg at Sidoarjo Barat General Hospital. Variations in suction pressure have the potential to influence changes in patients’ oxygen saturation. The research design used was a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest approach. The number of respondents was 30 in each group. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test to examine differences before and after suctioning within each group, as well as the Independent Sample T-Test to compare between groups. The results showed that the mean oxygen saturation in the 10mmHg group before suctioning was 99%, and after suctioning decreased to 97%, indicating an average reduction of 1.67% with a p-value < 0.001. In the 15mmHg group, the mean oxygen saturation before suctioning was 98% and decreased to 94% after suctioning, indicating an average reduction of 3.93% with a p-value < 0.001. The comparison test between the two groups showed a p-value < 0.001, meaning there was a significant difference in the reduction of oxygen saturation between suctioning with 10 mmHg and 15 mmHg pressures. It is expected that the hospital will further evaluate and develop a Standard Operating Procedure for suctioning by considering patients’ oxygen saturation. Keywords: oxygen saturation, suctioning, 10 mmHg pressure, 15 mmHg pressure.
