Abstract

ABSTRACT End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a global health problem that requires long term renal replacement therapy, such as hemodialysis. Comorbidities in ESRD patients can worsen both physical and psychological conditions, leading to a decreased quality of life. This study aimed to examine the relationship between comorbidities and the quality of life of ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Lavalette Hospital, Malang. A descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. The study involved 100 respondents selected using consecutive sampling. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was used to assess comorbidities, and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 (KDQOL-36) instrument was used to measure quality of life. Data analysis was performed using Spearman Rank correlation. The results indicated that most respondents had a moderate CCI score (41%) and a moderate quality of life (52%). Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between comorbidities and quality of life in ESRD patients (p = 0.000). In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between comorbidities and the quality of life of ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Lavalette Hospital, Malang. Higher comorbidity levels are associated with lower quality of life. These findings can inform nursing interventions aimed at managing comorbidities to improve patient quality of life.
