Abstract

Neonatal asphyxia is a condition in which a newborn baby is unable to breathe spontaneously and regularly within one minute of birth. Babies born with low birth weight (LBW) are also born prematurely, at risk of experiencing neonatal asphyxia. The most common causes of neonatal mortality are low birth weight (LBW) at 34.5% and asphyxia at 27.8% (Rufaindah et al., 2022). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of LBW and prematurity on the incidence of neonatal asphyxia in newborns at Sakinah Islamic Hospital in Mojokerto in 2025. This study used an observational analytical cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 2,196 respondents and a sample size of 339, drawn using simple random sampling. Data were analyzed statistically using logistic regression with an α value of <0.05. The majority of respondents (270 respondents (79.6%) were not LBW. The majority (276 respondents (81.4%) were not premature. The majority of respondents, 237 (69.9%), did not experience neonatal asphyxia. The results of a logistic regression statistical test with an α value of 0.05 obtained a Sig. <0.001 <0.05, indicating an influence of LBW and prematurity on neonatal asphyxia at Sakinah Islamic Hospital, Mojokerto Regency in 2025. Based on the OR value, LBW infants were 15.49 times more likely to experience asphyxia, and prematurity infants were 12.31 times more likely to experience asphyxia. LBW and prematurity cause the infant's respiratory system to be immature, increasing the likelihood of breathing difficulties that can lead to asphyxia (Wahyuli, Risnawati, Norhapifah, & Meihartati, 2023). Health workers, especially midwives, are expected to analyze the status of LBW and prematurity so that preventive measures and rapid and appropriate postnatal care can be implemented to save the baby's life.
