Abstract

Abstract - Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires high compliance with treatment in order to control blood sugar levels, so family support is needed to increase the compliance of the elderly in taking diabetes mellitus medication. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between family support and medication adherence in elderly people with type II diabetes mellitus in Domas Village, Trowulan, Mojokerto. This study design was a correlational analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all 42 elderly people with type II diabetes mellitus in Domas Village, Trowulan, Mojokerto. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 38 respondents. Data were collected using the family support questionnaire and the MMAS adherence questionnaire, and the results were tested using the chi-square test. The results showed that respondents with poor family support mostly had moderate medication adherence (12 respondents (66.7%). Respondents with good family support mostly had high medication adherence (13 respondents (65%). The chi-square test results show a p-value of 0.002 <α = 0.05, so H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. This means that there is a relationship between family support and medication adherence in elderly people with type II diabetes mellitus in Domas Village, Trowulan, Mojokerto. Family support is crucial for medication adherence in diabetes mellitus patients. Family support encourages patients to adhere to their medication schedules because they feel valued by those around them. Therefore, providing health education about diabetes mellitus to patients and their families is crucial to motivate them to better and more appropriately manage their care Keywords : Family Support, Adherence, Diabetes mellitus, Elderly
