Abstract
Abstract Anxiety is a frequent psychological response among patients awaiting surgical procedures and may adversely affect both physiological stability and psychological well-being. Non-pharmacological interventions such as deep breathing exercise have been reported to help alleviate anxiety effectively. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of deep breathing exercise on reducing preoperative anxiety. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed. A total of 84 respondents were recruited using simple random sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. Anxiety levels were assessed using the APAIS questionnaire and data were analyzed with Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. The findings revealed a significant reduction in anxiety levels in the intervention group compared to the control group after the intervention (p < 0.05). These results suggest that deep breathing exercise is an effective complementary approach to reduce preoperative anxiety. This study contributes to the growing evidence supporting non-pharmacological interventions as practical strategies in perioperative nursing care. Keywords: anxiety, preoperative, deep breathing exercise
