Abstract

Abstract - Complications in diabetes mellitus patients can be prevented by implementing good self-care management. However, many diabetes mellitus patients have poor self-care management, which can lead to unstable blood sugar levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self care management and blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus patients in the outpatient clinic of Al Irsyad Hospital, Surabaya. This study design was correlational with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variable was self care management, and the dependent variable was blood sugar levels. The population consisted of all 156 diabetes mellitus patients in the outpatient clinic of Al Irsyad Hospital. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 112 respondents. Data were collected using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities questionnaire, blood sugar level observations, and Spearman's Rho test. The results showed that almost all respondents with low self-care management had high blood sugar levels (20 respondents (83.7%). Respondents with moderate self-care management mostly had normal blood sugar levels. Respondents with high self-care management mostly had normal blood sugar levels (11 respondents (55%). The Spearman rho test results showed a p-value of 0.000 <α = 0.05, thus H1 was accepted, indicating a relationship between self-care management and blood sugar levels in diabetes patients in the Outpatient Clinic of Al Irsyad Hospital, Surabaya. The implementation of self-care management by diabetes mellitus patients has a positive impact on their quality of life, stabilizing their blood sugar levels. Therefore, nurses must be more proactive in providing patient education regarding self-care management. Keywords : Self care management, blood sugar levels, diabetes mellitus
