Abstract

ABSTRACT Shivering is a common complication in patients after spinal anesthesia in the surgical unit. Key risk factors include long surgical duration, female gender, extreme body mass index (BMI), large volumes of cold intravenous fluids, and the failure to implement passive or active rewarming interventions during the procedure. The purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing the incidence of shivering in patients after spinal anesthesia in the surgical unit of West Sidoarjo Regional Hospital. The study design used an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling with an accidental sampling approach. The sample in this study was 59 post-spinal anesthesia patients at the Surgical Unit of West Sidoarjo Regional Hospital during August 2025 who met the study criteria. The results showed that more than half of the respondents experienced a moderate surgical procedure (33 respondents (55.9%), most respondents underwent major surgical procedures (48 respondents (81.4%), more than half of the respondents were overweight (30 respondents (50.8%), more than half of the respondents experienced mild shivering (33 respondents (55.9%), there was an effect of surgical procedure duration on shivering in post-spinal anesthesia patients (p-value: 0.000), there was an effect of surgical procedure type on shivering in post-spinal anesthesia patients (p-value: 0.000), and there was an effect of body mass index on shivering in post-spinal anesthesia patients (p-value: 0.000). The implementation of a strict perioperative warming protocol comprehensively for high-risk patients with shivering will improve the quality of healthcare services, enhance patient safety, and enhance patient satisfaction.
