Abstract

ABSTRACT Stunting refers to children under five years of age with a Z-score of less than -2 SD (stunted) and less than -3 SD (severely stunted) (Fitriani & Darmawi, 2022). Poor maternal nutritional status during early fetal life impacts later outcomes, such as Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), Low Birth Weight (LBW), short stature, thinness, and low immunity, and can even lead to infant mortality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the Body Mass Index (BMI) of pregnant women and the incidence of stunting in the working area of the Ketrowonojoyo Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Pacitan Regency. This study employed an observational analytic design with a case-control approach. The population consisted of 332 children under three years of age (batita), and a sample of 182 was selected using simple random sampling. The data obtained were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods; statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman rho test with a significance level of α < 0.05. The majority of pregnant women suffered from undernutrition, comprising 73 respondents (40.1%). The Spearman rho test yielded a p-value of <0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between the BMI of pregnant women and the incidence of stunting in the Ketrowonojoyo Community Health Center area, Pacitan Regency. Pregnant women with poor nutritional status are more likely to have fetuses that suffer from nutritional deficiencies; conversely, pregnant women with normal nutritional status are more likely to deliver full-term infants with normal birth weights. Healthcare workers, particularly midwives, are expected to assess the BMI of pregnant women to facilitate preventive measures against stunting.
